Club events guarantee a memorable season
By Dee McClure, Director/Port Captain – Suttons Bay, Mich. (M-11)
I was so excited here in Northern Michigan to wake up recently to spring weather and 55-degree temperatures on a Sunday – only to see snow that next Monday.
As spring is arriving, albeit a bit slowly to many parts of the Great Lakes, now is the time to plan your summer cruising itineraries. One of the great things about being part of the GLCC is there are so many opportunities to explore new cruising areas and meet or catch up with GLCC members.
GLCC members are incredibly welcoming and supportive of newer cruisers looking for support or buddy boating. Don’t forget, the Harbor Reports are a key element to planning your cruising and understanding distances between harbors. The 120 GLCC Port Captains are happy to answer questions, provide local knowledge (i.e., the best anchorages, marine repairs, transportation, dining, veterinary care, etc.) and help make your stay a memorable event.
Have you checked out the GLCC Events page (https://www.glcclub.com/events-list)? It is a great place to get updates on all that is planned. This summer’s current six planned events span Lake Erie, Lake Superior, Lake Ontario and the North Channel, with more to be added.
May 17: The season kicks off with the Lake Superior Launch Brunch at Port Superior Marina, Minn. (S-192.5). The Brunch is a fun and informal early-season event to get together with boating friends and meet new ones. Registration link here.
June 13-15: Up next is the Lake Erie Rally at Middle Bass Island, Ohio (E-18.5). Chairs Janice and Jim Ehrman have planned yet another fabulous event. This year it is a murder mystery. A body has been found on Middle Bass Island. Who is it? How did it happen? Whodunnit? Help solve the case. Grab your best sleuthing attire and register here.
June 22: Check out the Region 47 Picnic at Metro Park, Ohio (E-23.8) which includes a Cornhole Competition. Chair Rob Hillman is in the middle of planning this event. Stay tuned for information coming soon.
June 30-July 2: The Wilderness Rally comes to Harbor Island, Ont. (NC-2). Bill and Sandi Matley are planning a laid-back event with potluck dinners and docktails. The coveted Wilderness Rally burgee will be available. Stay tuned for information coming soon.
July 5: The Lake Ontario Rally is planned at Toronto NYC (O-45). Chair Eric Sunstrom is finalizing the event’s details. Watch for information on this event in next month’s Lifeline.
July 13-17: The 2025 GLCC Rendezvous is in Little Current, Ont. (NC-17). Chairs Debby and Jib Turner are excited to host the GLCC’s 60th annual Rendezvous. The Little Current community is turning out to welcome GLCC members. If you’ve wanted to cruise to the North Channel or Little Current, attending the Rendezvous is a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow GLCC members, share favorite cruising grounds and anchorages and buddy boat to and from. Check out the registration here.
