We are pleased to introduce to you one of GLCC's newest Port Captains, Ed Mahoney for Rocky River, OH (E-11). Here's a brief introduction to get you acquainted!

Ed and E. J. Mahoney began sailing 34 years ago on Atwood Lake in central Ohio. Their first boat was a Catalina 22. Their sailing career spanned four boats, three Catalinas (22, 25 and 30) and their current 42-foot Endeavor. Ed and E. J. spent three years on Atwood Lake learning how to sail, dock, and do boat maintenance. In 1982, they moved to Lake Erie and joined the Cleveland Yachting Club in Rocky River, Ohio (E-11). For the next several years, they cruised Lake Erie and Lake Huron, dreaming of one day taking the boat to the Caribbean. Planning to do the great exit from the North and head South, Ed became a USCG-Licensed Captain.

In 2012, Ed and E. J. set about planning to take advantage of the long summer holiday offered by working for a European firm and explore the North Channel and Georgian Bay. They joined the GLCC on recommendations of their CYC friends. They began downloading Harbor Reports and planning the trip over the winter months. The North Channel and Georgian Bay worked some magic, and they were hooked. Their plans now include figuring out how to take the boat further north shortly after their daughter Meghan’s wedding in July, 2014. They may even lay the boat up on shores of Lake Michigan or Lake Superior, since they winter in Florida.

Both Ed and E. J. have greatly appreciated the local knowledge provided by the Harbor Reports and their GLCC friends. They look forward to making Rocky River a preferred cruising destination, and hope that Ed’s time as Port Captain will allow them to pass on the cruising spirit their friends gave them. If you plan to visit, Ed and E. J. hope you will contact them.
