Historian Ric Mixter is one of only a few journalists invited to tour the inner sanctums of the

locks, and his research shares several unique stories from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. This webinar explores the history of this marvel of engineering and includes the changes happening this year, as the U.S. Corps of Engineers prepares to fill and enlarge two of the historic locks to make sure the ore, grain and coal continues to move from Lake Superior to the rest of the world.

The History and Future of the Soo Locks is just one of two webinars Ric will present this season for the GLCCSchool. Coming next week watch for Up from the Briny Depths, the story of salt and it place in Great Lakes history.

Ric Mixter logs thousands of miles each year as one of the most requested Great Lakes historians. From archive footage to new underwater images of shipwrecks, Ric’s moving picture library is unmatched. He has written dozens of articles and has hosted over 30 shows on PBS stations airing all around the Midwest and Canada.  He’s even been featured as an expert on the Discovery and History Channels.  Despite all his professional accomplishments, Ric says his greatest productions are his three kids, all of whom are certified divers.
