Mike and Deb Hervey cruise to prestigious award
By Rear Commodore David Spencer
Usually, the GLCC’s prestigious Admiral Bayfield Award is presented at the GLCC’s Annual General Meeting in a nice hotel dining room with people dressed up and the tinkling of fine silverware in the background. Not this year.
Rear Commodore Dave Spencer presented Mike and Deb Hervey with their Admiral Bayfield Award while standing on the shore at a remote anchorage during the Wilderness Rally in McGregor Bay (NC-89).
In addition to cruising extensively on all five great lakes, Mike and Deb have completed the well-known Great Loop and the less familiar Down East Loop aboard their Grand Banks trawler Carousel.
The Herveys are generous in sharing their experience and wisdom in several GLCC School webinars they present during the off season.
When presenting the award, Rear Commodore Spencer noted that 249 boats completed the Great Loop in 2023, and, in comparison, 275 people have been aboard the International Space Station since it launched in 1998. But Carousel is only the 82nd boat to earn the GLCC’s Admiral Bayfield Award since it was introduced in 1987.
Previous Bayfield Award winners Chuck and Joann Mead were among those gathered in McGregor Bay to congratulate Mike and Deb.
