Add your name to the Great Lakes cruising Hall of Fame
By Bill Rohde, Chair, GLCC Admiral Bayfield Committee
Over its many years, the Great Lakes Cruising Club has awarded only 82 individuals or couples the club’s highest cruising recognition: the GLCC’s Admiral Bayfield Award.
The club is looking for the next Admiral Bayfield Award winner, given to members who have done substantial cruising in each of the Great Lakes.
For details about award requirements, reference https://www.glcclub.com/admiral-bayfield-award. But in brief, award recipients have:
- Recreationally cruised at least 5,000 nautical miles within the Great Lakes system in a vessel or vessels under their command.
- Met specific requirements regarding cruising of each Great Lake (e.g. numbers of ports or harbors visited, distance cruised, etc.).
- And, within each lake, have been under way to a new port or anchorage a minimum of seven days, calling at a minimum of three ports or anchorages all separated by at least 50 nautical miles.
Mileage and cruising requirements need not be achieved in one calendar year. Award applications must be documented for submission and review by the GLCC Admiral Bayfield Award committee, a team of experienced Great Lakes cruisers, each themselves recipients of the Admiral Bayfield Award.
Upon the committee’s review and recommendation, the GLCC Board of Directors grants the award, including a handsome commemorative wall plaque and special GLCC Admiral Bayfield Award burgee for recipients to proudly fly on their vessel.
Join the exclusive ranks of members who have achieved Bayfield Award status. Become one of those select few who proudly fly the gold-on-blue Admiral Bayfield burgee. We sincerely hope you’ll be the next award recipient.
